Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve |
|
In the early 50's, a Sandusky physician named Dean Sheldon, bought a 56 acre tract of valuable lakefront land in Huron Township. Although many local developers thought it was a waste of valuable land, Sheldon worked to develop the land as a nature preserve. Recognizing the value to the community and the local habitat, The Ohio Department of Natural Resources purchased the property in 1979 and combined it with an adjoining 330 acre marsh and in 1980 dedicated it as "Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve". Shown below are our scenic photographs of this beautiful preserve. |

While the 472 acre Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve is home to a large assortment of wildlife, it is also a beautiful place for walking, bird watching, painting and photography for people of all ages including seniors. A paved road goes from the parking area all the way back to the NASA Pump Station (about ¾ of a mile) and features observation platforms, views of marshland and Lake Erie including a sandy barrier beach (shown below in our panorama photo). There are also a variety of grass and uneven compacted earth hiking paths that wind through the woods for those that prefer a nature hike. Hunting. swimming, picnicking, dog walking and the collecting of plants and animals are prohibited. The Sheldon Marsh is about 12 miles from downtown Milan on Rt. 6 in Huron Township The entrance to the Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve is on the north side of Cleveland Avenue (Rt. 6) next to the Sawmill Creek resort. |
