In the garden, behind the Thomas Edison Birthplace, is the Edison-Milan Canal Basin Trail which overlooks the historic Milan Canal Basin and the Edison Trail. Thomas Edison, as a boy, loved watching the schooner's cone into the basin, being loaded and towed down the canal. Fortunately, his birthplace home was sitting on a hill, over the Basin, and in the early 1850's, he loved going down the hill with his friends to the canal and watching the activity of the basin which was full of ships, warehouses and people building ships to sail the Great Lakes. This memorable trail was designed by Erie MetroParks ranger Bill Graves and the trail goes from the colorful garden of the Edison's birthplace (shown above) , down the hill, across the canal via a special bridge and up to the towpath that was used to tow the ships down the canal. In September 11, 2011 people gathered from Friends of Erie MetroParks hiking program to celebrate the newly designed Edison-Milan Canal and what you see in the photos below are people enjoying the trail, the canal and the towpath. In future years, the rangers will put the finishing touches on this trail. |
