Each year, between September and December, the Friends of Erie Metroparks have a FREE program called "Go Take a Hike" in which you need to complete eight trails from eleven designated trails at the Erie MetroParks to win a prize. In 2011, the Kick-off was in Milan, Ohio at the Thomas Edison Birthplace which overlooks the Milan Canal Basin and the Edison Trail. Bill Graves, a ranger from EMP (who was also at the event) designed a new 3' gravel-based trail called "The Edison-Milan Canal Basin Trail" which goes from the garden of the Edison Birthplace, down through the hill, crosses the basin and up the other side to end on the Edison Trail MetroPark. The rangers, the Friends and the Boy Scouts worked hard to complete the new trail in time for the event. About 400 people showed up for the Kick-Off in Milan and they enjoyed the Skunk Cabbage Band in front of the Edison Home, or they could tour the Edison Birthplace and walk with Friends of EMP leading them to various historic trails. After the walk, the participants could enjoy free pizza and have some family fun at the Milan Historical Museum. If you want information about "Go Take a Hike", call 419-625-7783, ext 221 or go the Friends of Erie MetroParks listed below. The photos are from the Milan Kick-Off from September 11, 2011. |
