Huron River Greenway MetroPark

Milan Side - North Beside Mason Road

The Village of Milan to Mason Road (southern portion) of the Huron River Greenway trail is divided into two sections and this area deals with the land from Mason Road south to the private individual blocked area of the trail - about 1/2 mile of trail. This section of the trail consists of the normal bottom land of the canal plus the "deep cut" of the canal which required a  excavation of the hillside beside the trail which you can see when you first start on this trail. This section also has the Nickel Plate Railroad overhead crossing the trail in 1882 (after the canal closed) which still carries trains across the towpath today which you can see below. The Huron River is beside the trail as shown above..

This view of the Huron River was taken early in the morning in November when the frost was still on the ground which you can see on the view of the Wheeler property across the river.

Huron River Greenway - Seniors Walking Guide

Name of Trail Surface Difficulty Distance Hand/Access
Mason Road Trail Gravel/Earth Unimproved - Level Grade 3/4 mile Depends

This is a linear park so, unlike most park trails, this trail does NOT circle back to the starting point. This trail is fairly primitive with some low spots but easy to walk. As with all walking tails, a walking stick or cane may be useful for seniors. If walking alone, please carry a cell phone. The HRG is a great park for walking, jogging or bicycling but never go further than the distance you are prepared to return to your starting point. I would also strongly advise you to use a bug repellent, during the summer season, when walking the Greenway or any other trail in this area.
