Smith, Williams, Winslow, Hoag and Lynch

John Smith bought the lot in 1848, during the Milan Canal days, from Asa Sanford who also built a house on the lot in 1825. Whether Smith torn the Sanford house or built his house around the Sanford house we don't know, but in 1849 Smith built a brick house at One East Front Street at Milan now Milanites know now as the Hoag House. In 1863, Smith sold the house to Mrs. Chloe Williams and Mrs. Williams sold to house William Winslow in 1868. Winslow was related to Zenus King (a brother-in-law who built the iron bridge in Milan) who also built his home in Milan. Mr. and Mrs. Winslow had no children, but a niece came to live with them who was named Julia Hardy. Julia married Mr. Hoag and she eventually inherited the house. And she was a historian buff who had scrapbooks and other records of local history. This house is a landmark in Milan and it's a shame that this house is in poor condition. I think the out-of-town owner Kevin Lynch, likes to fix it up on weekends, but the house is deteriorated so much, that I can't think he can fix it up. Eventually it's going to be a public nuisance and in time, they'll have to order the owner to tear it down.
