Township Hall - Milan, Ohio |
|
There is no building in Milan that represents it's glorious past like the beautiful Milan Township Hall, which towers over the village square. The building was dedicated on July 4, 1876 (historic photos shown below) on a site that housed the old Eagles Hotel. Twelve years later, in 1888, a massive fire destroyed the Township Hall plus the Presbyterian Church, the Park Hotel and most of the south square. After the fire, only the brick walls were standing and unfortunately, the city fathers discovered that the building was only insured for about half it's value. But the citizen's were proud of their landmark, so they set upon rebuilding the hall. One year later, in 1889 the new Township Hall was opened and the new tower with the Seth Thomas clock was added in 1891. One of the unique things about the hall (and the Civil War Monument in the square) is that they're owned by the township, not the city, hence the name Milan Township Hall. |
